Development of the awards is overseen by an Industry Steering Group comprising representation from the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the National Edible Oils Distributors Association (NEODA), the Frozen At Sea Fillets Association (FASFA), Past National Award Winners, equipment suppliers and trade media. The Awards are sponsored and supported by a wide variety of leading industry players.
Entering the National Fish & Chip Awards 2012 is easy and there a number of categories that you can enter. To enter or to find out more, simply review the criteria and rules for each of the awards below and then complete the entry form and send it back to us.
Entries to the National Fish & Chip Awards 2012 are judged by teams of acknowledged industry experts selected by the Industry Steering Group. The awards are judged without any bias towards geographical region, type of fish used, frying methods employed, suppliers or distributors used, and are judged solely on the criteria and rules set out in the entry forms and rules which can be downloaded below.

Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award
This category is open to all bona fide independent fish and chip takeaway shops with three outlets or less (including those with a restaurant attached) in the United Kingdom (excluding shops in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man).

Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award
The Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year category is open to all bona fide independent fish and chip restaurants (with three outlets or less if part of a group) in the United Kingdom (but excluding shops in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man).

This award is open to all bona fide fish and chip shop operators with four or more takeaway outlets.

The Best Foodservice Outlet Serving Fish and Chips category is open to all bona fide general foodservice operators in the United Kingdom (but excluding businesses in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) with four or more outlets in their group/chain, excluding fish and chip restaurants and takeaways. Examples of entrants could include supermarket cafés, pub chain restaurants and cafés within department stores or leisure sector.

This award recognises outstanding new talent entering the fish and chip shop trade and is open to independent fish and chip takeaway shops, that have been trading for 18 months or less (since 1 September 2009).

This award recognises shops for their staff training and development policies. The judging panel will review areas such as delivery, development, impact, monitoring and relevance.

The award provides entrants with the opportunity to be recognised for their excellence with regards to contributing to their local community.

This award recognises fish and chip shops that have shown initiative in improving the environmentally responsible practices of their business and the seafood that they buy, serve and promote. This award also aims to encourage further progress across the fish and chip sector by increasing awareness of sustainably sourced seafood and the practical support available to businesses.

The competition to find the Young Fish Frier of the Year offers young fish friers the chance to showcase their skills and background knowledge in all aspects of fish frying, plus their ability to run a successful business. The applicants need to have a positive attitude, together with confidence in their own abilities.
